Top sights & highlights in Port Macquarie

Help the koalas of Port Macquarie! Dark, squinty eyes, fluffy ears and soft, cuddly fur: the koala, Australia’s national animal, melts the hearts of more than just children. But we often forget about the dangers this sweet, peaceful animal faces, whether it’s the construction of highways in the middle of its natural habitat or the cutting down of its primary food source – eucalyptus trees, dog attacks, disease or even bushfires.

Port Macquarie - a hospital for koalas on the east coast

Unfortunately, the list of threats to the grey marsupial is very long. The Port Macquarie Koala Sanctuary takes care of these defenceless animals. The port city is located on the east coast of Australia, about 380 kilometres from Sydney. Here, numerous volunteers treat the little warriors and release them into the wild in great shape.

This is your chance to get an insight into this valuable work and get up close and personal with the koalas. The Koala Hospital in Port Macquarie is one of Australia’s top attractions. An absolute recommendation from me. The next attraction is waiting for you directly on the coast: a lovely lighthouse with a beautiful sandy beach.

No more injured animals on the roadside! That’s what two shopkeepers in the coastal town of Port Macquarie thought in 1973. Gene and Max Starr started taking in injured and orphaned koalas and caring for them before releasing them back into the wild. What began as a selfless effort by these two angels has now grown into something big. The result is a large koala hospital staffed by many volunteers.

This non-profit organisation dedicates its heart and soul to the health of animals. Due to severe injuries, Koalas who will never be able to live in the Australian wild again may even stay in the hospital for the rest of their lives. You have a unique opportunity to get up close and personal with koalas in this loving hospital. It is simply a wonderful attraction on the east coast of Australia!

Information and tips about Koala Hospital

Port Macquarie Koala Sanctuary

Tip 1: The Koala Hospital is open daily* from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm and is open to the public during these times. Admission is free.

Guided tours are available daily* at 15:00 when the koalas are being fed. They are free and do not require a reservation. I highly recommend them if you have a thirst for knowledge and want to learn more about the life of koalas in general and the hospital in particular. You can also ask any questions that interest you.

The Koala Hospital is pleased to receive donations.

* Closed only on 25 December (Christmas Day)

Tip 2: The Koala Hospital in Port Macquarie welcomes volunteers for a one-month placement. This unique experience allows you to work with animals nearby and learn much about them. Some volunteers even help raise a baby koala ‘‘Joe’’).

Although the waiting time is long (sometimes several years), it is well worth it.

Help the koalas: Another great way to support the work of the Koala Hospital is to adopt one of the adorable koalas in exchange for a small donation.

You can also make an even smaller donation to plant a tree for a koala, which will help preserve the animal’s habitat. Click here to donate.

Tacking Point Lighthouse / Lighthouse Beach

Lighthouse Beach

The Port Macquarie coastline also has a lot to offer. The Tacking Point Lighthouse is on the eastern headland, jutting into the Pacific Ocean. Built-in 1879 and still in operation, this pretty white lighthouse provides magnificent views of the blue ocean and the luxurious Lighthouse Beach.

During the whale season, from June to November, the chances of seeing humpback whales in the waves off the coast are also very high. This place is worth a visit.

The route to Sydney continues from Port Macquarie to Sydney or directly to the Blue Mountains National Park, located near the metropolis.
