Encounter a koala in its natural habitat
You want to see one live when you’re travelling in Australia. But where can you find them? In this article, I’ll tell you five spots where you can observe the animals in their natural habitat – moments of happiness included.
Have a fantastic time koala spotting in Australia!
1. Raymond Island
Koala bears are everywhere! You are guaranteed to see koalas in the wild on this small island just 12 square kilometres south of Australia. The sleepy koalas snooze here in rows on the treetops of the eucalyptus trees. You can reach the island by free ferry from the town of Paynesville. Once on Raymond Island, the 1.2-kilometre-long Koala Trail begins.
The hiking trail takes you through the quiet streets of the inhabited island. You will find them quickly in the eucalyptus trees at the side of the road or sometimes a little off the path. You will meet koalas here! Happy koala bear hunting to you!
2. Kangaroo Island
You will likely encounter koalas on the beautiful Kangaroo Island, which is more than worth a visit. The chances are excellent in Flinders Chase National Park. Here, the sleepy koala likes to sleep on one of the many eucalyptus trees, and you might even be lucky enough to see one of the animals at your feet. That’s what happened to us – an unforgettable moment. They are ubiquitous on Kangaroo Island!
The beautiful island in South Australia is also well worth a visit. You’ll find turquoise-blue bays as well as fur seals and cute kangaroos.
3. Magnetic Island
Magical Magnetic Island! This dreamlike island not only awaits you with beautiful bays where crystal-clear water kisses the beach. No – you’re also likely to spot koalas among the eucalyptus here. Keep your eyes peeled on the Forts Walk to spot the koala bear in one of the many eucalyptus trees next to the path. You might even spot a koala with a baby. My fingers are firmly crossed for you!
In the meantime, you will also enjoy the view of the island’s beautiful landscape. An excursion that will undoubtedly be well worth it.
4. Eyre Peninsula
Below Port Lincoln on the beautiful Eyre Peninsula are two secret spots teeming with koalas. You are guaranteed to see these cute animals up close in their natural habitat. On the route to the little-known Whalers Way, where you can marvel at the magnificent coastline of South Australia, you will find what you are looking for.
Next to the road, you will find a free spot to marvel at the koalas. If, contrary to expectations, the animals are still hiding, you will have success at Mikkira Station, just 8 minutes away. There is a free-living koala colony on private grounds, which you can visit on a booked tour (at the Visitor Centre in Port Lincoln). On some days in winter, you can also book a day pass directly on-site.
5. Great Ocean Road - Road to Cape Otway
The Great Ocean Road – an absolute top attraction in the Australian south – not only scores with its fantastic scenery. On a turn-off of the road with probably the most beautiful view in Australia, you also have a great chance of meeting koalas.
The road to Cape Otway leads through a forest full of eucalyptus trees, home to Australia’s national animal. At the side of the road, you will not only come across the parked cars of other onlookers but, if you are lucky, you may also see one of the cuddly animals. By the way, the koala’s appearance can vary depending on the species. So, on the Great Ocean Road, it’s time to keep your eyes open, spy out the green treetops and finally, look forward!
I hope you have lots of fun spotting the koalas.
