Brighton - beach houses (bathing boxes)
They are as famous as colourful dogs: The 82 beach cabins on Dendy Street Beach in the coastal suburb of Brighton are worth seeing. They are indeed colourful. Colourful even. The unmistakable row of pretty ‘bathing boxes’ or beach houses characterises the coast of Brighton strikingly.
This attracts numerous tourists to the area, with photos taken in front of the painted wooden buildings. Somehow understandable, as they are one of the most impressive sights in Melbourne! Even more remarkable is the history of the beach huts. They have been around since the early 20th century. The classic Victorian architecture has been preserved to this day. Only the colourful external appearance changes from time to time.
Artists or the owners of the beach huts give the pretty ‘bathing boxes’ a new, brightly coloured coat of paint from time to time. Which hut will be your favourite?
Penguins in St Kilda
Here comes a real highlight in Melbourne! Penguins near a big city? Is there such a thing? Melbourne is home to a colony of around a thousand little penguins. A rocky harbour dam in the coastal suburb of St. Kilda offers the smallest penguin species in the world a protected place to live and breed. The first pair of penguins to nest on the pier at St Kilda was discovered in 1974. For more than 40 years, the place has proven to be safe for the protected little penguins. A security fence has even been erected to keep it that way.
Nevertheles, there is good news for us humans. The best times to watch the cute animals from the pier are dawn and dusk. In the evenings, even on-site volunteers illuminate the area with an infrared lamp so as not to frighten the sensitive penguins (see photo). What’s more, the whole thing is entirely free of charge! A spectacular view of Melbourne’s gigantic skyline is included. An absolute must-see in Melbourne!
Free City Circle Tram
Brisbane and the city of Melbourne offer its visitors a free way to explore the city centre. The City Circle Tram not only has a pretty cool, historic style. It also takes you around the city centre completely free of charge. Of course, this city tour in Melbourne stops at many stations where you can hop on and off anytime. For example, Federation Square.
You will travel for around 50 minutes if you take the entire tour. An excellent opportunity to get around the city centre of this famous metropolis by public transport free of charge and stress-free!
Federation Square
Many cities would love a modern yet cosy public square like Federation Square. Happy Melbourne gives its people and tourists such a centrepiece. It is one of the most exciting places in this famous city. The centre of the town is home to cultural institutions such as art galleries and museums, as well as bars, restaurants, and cafés.
Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the square, one of Melbourne’s top attractions for tourists from home and abroad. It’s worth a visit to catch a glimpse of the fascinating architecture of Federation Square.

It is one of Australia’s most significant war memorials and serves as a memorial to all Australians who have ever served or died in war. The imposing, beautiful building is nestled in the peaceful atmosphere of the lush green park. The shrine houses a museum on the world wars, the impact of Australians on the war effort and current military conflicts.
Another absolute highlight is the sensational view over Melbourne’s impressive skyline. Especially from the terrace of the shrine on the upper floor, you have a first-class view of the silhouette of the metropolis. Simply a great place!

Melbourne is also the main starting point for great excursions and activities in the surrounding area, such as the stunning Great Ocean Road.
One of the best highlights, the impressive Wilsons Promontory National Park on the south-eastern coast, is only about 3 hour’s drive from Melbourne and boasts one of the most beautiful beaches in Australia.
